Who Built The Library Of Celsus?

Celsus Polemaeanus, was an important senator during the reign of Trajan (Roman Emperor). Celsus Polemaeanus was appointed as the governor of Asia. Therefore Celsus was in charge of Eastern Roman Provinces. Celsus’ son, Tiberius Julius Aquila was also a important bureaucrat in the Roman Empire’s administration. He wanted to commemorate his father’s name and title so he decided to build a this great structure.

When Was The Library Of Celsus Built?

Tiberius Julius Aquila entrusted skilled architects to build the unique library in the center of Ephesus city. When Aquila’s father Celsus Polemaeanus died in 114 A.D he was buried next to this elegant library. The Library of Celsus was opened for public service in 117 A.D with a great ceremony.

Library Of Celsus is located at Ephesus ancient city. Ephesus city is within the Seljuk Province of Izmir City in Turkey. Ephesus is the best-preserved Greco-Roman ancient city in Turkey.

Ephesus was once the capital of Ionian League, meaning the capital of Greek cities in Western Anatolia. It was the most significant harbour city in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Unfortunately the library severely damaged because of an earthquake which took place in Western Anatolia. Facade of the building survived while the other parts were demolished.
